Lag Ba’Omer Event – Sounds from the Celestial Orchard
Generously sponsored by ACJC (Australian Centre for Jewish Civilisation)
Lag la-omer is many things. Chief among them is a celebration of Rabbi Shim’on bar Yohai, the hero of the Zohar. To mark this auspicious day, we will be launching a new mystical album by two beloved local musos.
Working with Oz’s own Nathan Wolski, Gideon Preiss and Rachel Moshel have created a musical response to a modern mystical short story by master Yiddish symbolist Der Nister. Ostensibly a story about a wedding dance, the story ‘Poylish’ is equal parts mystical, erotic and fantastique!
Gideon and Rachel’s 20-minute instrumental composition fuses klezmer and jazz with ethereal synth-layered soundscapes to explore the power of music to transport to a mystical realm.
To launch this exciting new work, Nathan will first guide us through the short story and its zoharic associations, and we will then have a ‘listening party’ and perhaps a little tantz!
Space is limited.
