Poetry Salon: Prayer as Poetry
An evening of Jewish liturgy, art and poetry, exploring the ways ancient texts find new expression through contemporary creative practice.
Join us for a cozy salon where Jewish prayer and literature come alive through collage and poetry.
Encounter ten original collaborative collage works by artists Tunni Kraus and Becky Litwin, each offering a visual interpretation of passages from Kabbalat Shabbat. Alongside our ancient texts, hear poet Tali Lavi draw on the rich world of Jewish literature, touching our hearts with her evocative words.
Rabbanit Ellyse Borghi will guide us through the texts that inspire the evening’s creative works, opening up new ways for us each to interpret these words and ideas.
There’ll be time to linger with the texts and the art, meet their makers, sip a glass of wine, and enjoy the company.
About the artists:
Becky Litwin is an artist and poet on the hunt for the magic in the mundane. She draws inspiration from the small beauties of this world — birds, blobs and bugs alike.
Tunni Kraus is a contemporary Melbourne-based visual artist whose exhibition profile spans from major international institutions to local artist-run spaces. Working across diverse mediums, his conceptual studio practice centres on immersive, long-term research projects.
Tali Lavi is a writer, poet, critic and public interviewer. Her essays and reviews have appeared in The Jewish Quarterly, The Saturday Paper, Australian Book Review and other publications. Tali has been writing poetry as a response to October 7 and its aftermath since July 2024 and curated ‘The Voices of the Poets’ as part of an exhibition at Goldstone Gallery (2025). Much of her work explores ideas of memory and the presence of absence whilst employing religious symbolism and language.
